Who am I?
An award-winning television news producer with more than 20 years of experience who is looking for a way to impact the future of news. Specifically, I seek to keep news relevant for the next generations by finding new ways to share our content. I am a listener, a communicator, and an innovator who seeks to share stories from voices we don't hear to audiences who need to hear them. I am experienced at simplifying complex and complicated concepts through creative use of resources and storytelling to increase audience engagement. Worked on cross-department teams to innovate ways to share news product in fashion that reaches younger audience.
What can I do?
As a news producer, I use many of those buzzword verbs in ways you may not have imagined. Multitasking, writing, editing, researching topics, and effective interpersonal communication are all muscles that I flex daily on the job. Other core skills include: critical thinking skills, creative problem-solving abilities, effective in a crisis situation, meets deadlines, detail-oriented while still focused on the larger picture, and a collaborative leadership style.
What have I done?
Senior News Producer -- WRAL-TV, Raleigh NC
Time to teach others how to do what I do. I am responsible for coordinating and designing the onboarding process for new newscast producers. I also provide much of the instruction in the first month of employment. After making significant changes to the process, I have trained ten new producers in the first nine months of holding this position. In addition to new hire training, I also provide follow-up feedback sessions for all producers, serve as the primary producer on innovative programming, and serve as point person and archivist for our awards preparation. Oh, and I still produce daily newscasts twice a week on average, more in the holiday season.
News Producer -- WRAL-TV, Raleigh NC
I started producing in 2001, cutting my teeth on a half-hour newscast on Sunday morning. From there, I have worked my way up to my current role producing the 6pm newscast on weekdays. Along the way, I have produced more than a dozen news specials and special events. I have tackled long-term projects and many hours of breaking news and continuous coverage. My work has been recognized with 3 regional Emmys and 2 regional Edward R. Murrow awards, along with other accolades.
News ENG Editor -- WRAL-TV, Raleigh NC
My first position at WRAL was a part-time editor working two nights a week. Within a year, I was promoted to a full-time position. From 2001 through spring 2004, I split my workweek between editing and producing until a full-time producing opening became available. Living in the production side of television underscored my love of sound and video, and allowing people to tell their own stories. It also created a distinctive process in my producing style that can still be seen today.
Writing Coach and Editor -- Freelance -- 2015 to present
A friend whom I have always found to express herself quite well in conversation stunned me when she said she despised writing so much that she could not even write an email without angst. It was a skill she wanted to develop, but wasn't sure how to do so. I became her writing coach. She started a blog on her website, and now says she not only enjoys writing, she even writes essays for personal pleasure. While I don't guarantee that kind of transformation for everyone, I have branched out to help people tell their stories with their voices while editing them to meet style and standards.
Gale Force Media Crew Member -- 2000-2010
When the Carolina Hurricanes moved to Raleigh, the opportunity to work with the team presented itself. For 10 years, I worked for the in-house production crew, creating the in-game entertainment show during hockey, NC State basketball, NC State football, and other sporting events at PNC Arena and Carter-Finley Stadium. I learned to operate many of the pieces of equipment, but my primary positions were in-game replay, and creating fan experience videos during the game (on a tape-to-tape setup) while playing back commercials during breaks in play.
Freelance
What writer hasn't picked up freelance work from time to time? I spent a year in 2015 writing for The Mason Jar blog at Swig.com to help a friend launch the site. I have also written for TV Technology, Government Video and provided clips for animal rescue websites and other local fundraisers.
